Jun 29/22 Trauma Informed Training for Yoga Teachers – Free Professional Development Webinar
$0.00 – $30.00
June 29, 2022 7-8:30pm Live Streamed via Zoom. Recording will be available.
Free YAA Member Professional Development Workshop with Paula Fayerman:
This one-hour introduction to contemporary trauma theory will benefit all yoga and meditation teachers, and particularly those who have an interest in trauma; who have experienced trauma themselves; or have students who have trauma histories. This is primarily in lecture format, with time for movements, meditation practices and questions.
We will introduce the definition of trauma, and different types of traumatic events.
Yoga and meditation practice may stimulate a trauma response and students may become overwhelmed. We learn ways to identify trauma and the dysregulated nervous system, using symptoms of hyperarousal (anxiety or fight/flight response) and hypoarousal (paralysis, withdrawal and freeze).
The concept of the window of tolerance is introduced. This is when the nervous system functions most effectively, when we are balanced, calm and at ease. We discuss methods yoga teachers can use to promote safety and security in their students. With feelings of safety, and within the window of tolerance, our practice becomes a rich exploration.
Zoom link will be noted on your registration receipt, which will be sent by email after you proceed through the checkout. An email reminder will be sent to registered participants the day of the class and the recording link will be sent the day after the class.

About Paula: Paula Fayerman is trained as a Medical Doctor in Family Medicine. Her interest in healing extends beyond traditional allopathic medicine, including wisdom from yoga and meditation. She started yoga through the Yoga Centre of Calgary (YCC) in 1984, primarily using asana practice to help with stresses of medical school. Her explorations lead her to complete the YCC 500 hour Yoga Teacher training certification in 2001 under Barbara Eastham. She accompanied David McAmmond in 2000 to Kabir Baug, Pune, India, and then returned on her own in 2001, continuing her Therapeutic Yoga Training with Acharya Yoganand (Dr. S.V. Karandikar). She is Certified as a Yoga Therapist through the International Association of Yoga Therapists (C-IAYT). Richard Miller is considered a primary teacher and she participated in his retreats since 2004, and completed level 1 and 2 trainings in iRest. Her interests also include Buddhist practice and she sat annual retreats in the North American Theravada tradition, she considers Jack Kornfield to be a main inspiration. Her interest in movement and posture lead her to become a certified teacher of the Feldenkrais Method, and a student of Hanna Somatics. Interested in energy anatomy, she certified in Medical Acupuncture under the teachings of Dr. Steven Aung and completed the Advanced Practitioner program in Eden Energy Medicine. She is also a Fellow of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine, University of Arizona. Trauma and trauma informed care are very important to her, for personal and professional reasons. She studied with leaders of the field and is grateful for the growth of knowledge in trauma theory and therapeutic applications. She feels that understanding trauma will bring greater understanding to mind-body-energy medicine, and also reveal correlations between allopathic medicine, modern western psychology and the ancient teachings in yoga and Buddhism. Paula knows that healing happens in relationship, embraced in the arms of compassion and wisdom.
