Free YAA Full and Lifetime Member Professional Development Workshop Recording with Paula Fayerman:
This one-hour introduction to contemporary trauma theory will benefit all yoga and meditation teachers, and particularly those who have an interest in trauma; who have experienced trauma themselves; or have students who have trauma histories. This is primarily in lecture format, with time for movements, meditation practices and questions.
We will introduce the definition of trauma, and different types of traumatic events.
Yoga and meditation practice may stimulate a trauma response and students may become overwhelmed. We learn ways to identify trauma and the dysregulated nervous system, using symptoms of hyperarousal (anxiety or fight/flight response) and hypoarousal (paralysis, withdrawal and freeze).
The concept of the window of tolerance is introduced. This is when the nervous system functions most effectively, when we are balanced, calm and at ease. We discuss methods yoga teachers can use to promote safety and security in their students. With feelings of safety, and within the window of tolerance, our practice becomes a rich exploration.
